Website development cost: how to compare scope and quotes

·3 min read

Plan website development costs around templates, content, integrations and launch checks. Compare quotes and calculate your own labour budget.

From scope to a testable release
  1. Content & templates

  2. Build & integrations

  3. Launch & handover

A five-page brochure site and a five-screen customer portal are different projects. The former publishes information; the latter stores user data and enforces business rules. Start by deciding which one you need. For a business website, unique page templates, editorial workflow and content readiness usually explain more of the estimate than the raw page count. Separate the cost of writing and translating copy from the cost of implementing its templates.

Start with the scope, not a headline price

Costs to include before you compare quotes

  • Content migration includes URL mapping and redirects. Ask who inventories old URLs and checks the destination of each important page.
  • Hosting, domain renewals, CMS subscriptions and licensed assets recur after launch. Record the owner and renewal terms for each account.
  • Include keyboard navigation, mobile layouts, form error states and agreed performance checks in acceptance, not an undefined final polish phase.

Where to simplify — and where to keep the work

Reuse templates before cutting quality checks. Ten service pages sharing one well-designed layout can require less engineering than three unrelated designs. Launch with the languages you can maintain, while keeping the content model ready for more. A cheap build with no way for your team to edit it can create a recurring developer dependency.

Turn the scope into a budget

Ask for hours by work package: discovery, design, implementation, testing and release. Multiply each package by its agreed rate, then add external services and an explicit allowance for unresolved risks. Compare quotes against the same acceptance criteria, currency and tax treatment. Calendar weeks are not person-weeks: two engineers working together change the effort and coordination cost. For ongoing work, choose a monthly period. Keep one-off setup separate from recurring fees, and ask who approves changes before additional work starts.

A brief that gets you a useful estimate

  1. List page types, languages and the person supplying approved copy and imagery.
  2. Describe the complete lead journey: form, validation, notification and CRM destination.
  3. Agree who owns the domain, source code and CMS, plus launch checks and post-launch support.

Frequently asked questions

Why can two quotes for the same number of pages differ?

Page count hides design variety, CMS setup, migration and integrations. Ask both suppliers to quote the same templates, content responsibilities and acceptance checks. A lower price may reflect reusable work or a smaller scope; the breakdown should make the difference visible.

What information makes a website estimate reliable?

List page templates, content owners, languages, forms and integrations. Include migration and redirects. Ask suppliers to price the same launch checklist.

Are hosting, copywriting and translations included?

Only when itemised. Separate design and implementation from content production, domain renewal, hosting, paid plugins and ongoing updates.

Can we launch with fewer pages and expand later?

Yes. Start with the pages needed to explain the offer and complete an enquiry. Agree reusable templates and preserve URLs when expanding.

How should we compare a fixed quote with hourly work?

Compare deliverables, assumptions, revisions and acceptance criteria first. For hourly work, agree checkpoints and a spending limit; for fixed scope, define change approval.

Bring the scope. We will help make it buildable.

Share the user journey, integrations and launch constraints. We can clarify the scope and prepare an estimate with assumptions and exclusions.
